FibreLab X Nic Brittin: Redefining Sustainable Luxury Collaboration

This collaboration brings together Nic Brittin’s signature block-printed linen craftsmanship and FibreLab’s premium cushion inserts, handmade from recycled textiles.

‘Redefining Sustainable Luxury is our latest artist collaboration with sustainable block print artist Nic Brittin. We began working with Nic in July last year after coming across her incredible colourful block printed cushion covers. This cushion collection is a collaboration featuring Nic’s signature block printed linen covers and filled with our luxury cushion inserts made from recycled textiles - co-designed to unite our vision of using the power of colour and textiles to redefine sustainable luxury.

Each cushion is a sustainable heirloom piece, made to divert textiles from landfill and transform your living space using sustainable materials. At a time dominated by fast fashion, fast furniture and the mass production of low-quality and cheap textiles, through this collaboration we wanted to create a range of luxury cushions that repurpose existing materials while being designed to last a lifetime.

Our recycled cushion inserts, filled with 100% recycled end-of-life textiles and lined with a regenerative wool wadding makes the cushions plush, heavy-weight and soft-to-touch, while Nic Brittin’s timeless stripes ensure the piece remains a cherished addition to any home for years to come.

Designed as an heirloom piece, these cushions are Nic Brittin’s classic twist on stripes – with three unique prints available: Casablanca, La Paz and Oaxaca.  The Oaxaca cushion and La Paz bolster combine Earth-inspired tones with playful colours that draw from Nic’s childhood memories of travelling with her family. They’re warm and colourful and will add a great splash of fun to your home. The Casablanca bolster cushion is a departure from Nic’s traditional bright colour palette, bringing a new, sophisticated, neutral print that still retains the charm of hand block printed stripes.

All cushions are printed using water-based paints on 100% European linen and lovingly sewn by Studio AK Threads and Fabricworks. Studio AK provide sustainable fashion and textiles production and Fabricworks are a women lead social enterprise providing employment and training opportunities in textile manufacturing for women in East London who have previously faced multiple barriers to employment.

Q&A with Nic Brittin

What drew you to block printing as your chosen technique?

I took some time after the passing of my mother to pursue several creative outlets and ultimately found my love for the art of block printing. After working in the fashion industry as a makeup artist for years, which relies on many people's input and collaboration, I wanted a craft where I had ultimate creative freedom to create art that brought me joy. I also inherited my mother’s sewing machine and taught myself how to sew, so these two creative pursuits lined up perfectly to start creating tablecloths, napkins, runners, fabric by the meter and cushions, all lovingly hand printed with beautiful, charming designs.

There is something incredibly meditative - and kind of boring at the same time - about block printing. To some people it would be incredibly boring but to me I love the constant rythmic movement and that you don’t have to overthink it. There is real beauty in the imperfection and simplicity of the technique, for example the lines of the stripes joining up with each print.

How does sustainability and designing for longevity inform your creative process and the final textile creation?

My initial reason for wanting to create these products was for them to be heirloom pieces, homeware that you create happy memories around and then pass them down for the next generation in the family to do the same. With this in mind, using 100% linen for the products was the obvious choice as it is extremely durable and with the right care can last for decades. It was also a conscious decision to use European linen and Eco paints in order to keep the environmental impact to a minimum. In a time of fast fashion and incredibly wasteful overconsumption of textiles products we need products that last and that people want to keep.

How would you describe the FibreLab X Nic Brittin cushions?

These cushions are heirloom pieces that you cherish and keep your whole life. They’re designed to become an integral feature of your home that your family remembers and recognises for years to come, a cushion that gets passed down through the generations. These are long-lasting and long-loving pieces.
