Who are They?

Postcarbon lab, founded by Dian-Jen Lin and Hannes Hulstaert is a sustainability and biohacking consultancy focusing on transdisciplinary design through research.  This lab reframes real-world problems with transformative tech and out-of-the-box thinking. The award-winning lab propositions a new way of approaching sustainability in the garment industry; through regenerative activism, which advocates proactive engagement from an industrial entry point.

What are they doing?

Bacterial Pigment Dyeing and Photosynthesis Coating. This London-based start-up has created photosynthesis coating, which comprises of a layer of living algae that can be applied to the fabric of garments. This coating absorbs carbon dioxide and emits oxygen, turning the carbon into sugar. According to the cofounder, one large T-shirt – which approximates nearly a square metre of material – can generate about as much oxygen as a six-year-old oak tree.

Projects:

Transdisciplinarity and collaboration are of utmost importance to Post Carbon Lab. They have  collaborated with partners from The Natural History Museum, The Francis Crick Institute, and A/D/O New York.
