At a time of year that often results in a lot of waste, we are offering the perfect opportunity to shop mindful and valuable handmade gifts this Christmas that carry a story of craftmanship and sustainability.
Across the weekend you can also join a range of festive workshops hosted in partnership with Nobu Hotel London Shoreditch, that creatively recycle Nobu’s hotel linens, from making handmade origami decorations to learning traditional Japanese furoshiki gift wrapping techniques. The Makers
uri studio
Balancing dreams and motherhood, finding grace in quiet hours. In a small Forest Hill studio, each piece is made to order, reflecting a dedication to craftsmanship, sustainability, and timeless design. Balancing work as a designer and pattern cutter at a London tailor with the joys and demands of single parenthood, Uri Studio brings intentionality to every edition, drawing from a rich tapestry of cultural influences and an eye for subtle detail. With only three releases a year, each design embodies a thoughtful refinement, created in tiny quantities to ensure exclusivity and minimise waste. Each piece harmonises beauty and functionality - an expression of considered, enduring style.
Nic brittin
In her 20’s Nic became a makeup artist in the fashion industry until this journey took an unexpected turn when she discovered a passion for block printed textiles and simultaneously inherited a 70-year-old sewing machine after the passing of her mother. Having always been captivated by the transformative power of colours and textures, Nic embraced this exciting transition, now combining her expertise in colours and past aesthetics with the art of block printing, allowing her to design and produce mesmerising textile creations. Printed on 100% linen using eco paints, products are sustainable heirloom pieces, made to enjoy memories around.
The Revival
The Revival is a community-led organisation based in Kantamanto Market, Accra, founded by Yayra Agbofah, creating awareness, art, and jobs with upcycled global textile waste that arrives in Ghana. The Revival create high-quality design pieces using upcycled textile waste from Kantamanto Market, ranging from patchwork kimonos, tote bags and pouches.
Fern Taylor ceramics
Fern Taylor is an artist based in Deptford, focusing on Nerikomi ceramics. After studying Fine Art at Kingston university primarily working with paint, Fern fell in love with a new discipline, learning out of a Ceramic studio in Stoke Newington. Her use of the Japanese Nerikomi technique creates unique patterns throughout her pieces including mugs, vases and tableware.
PALMWORKS
PALMWORKS is a small business born from a desire to celebrate existing resources, with a considered & reverent approach. The name Palmworks is simple in its meaning ; it conveys the way in which each piece of jewellery is made by hand & offered out to the world. PALMWORKS is committed to continuing the life of existing resources, with all jewellery & accessories crafted with respect for Mother Earth.
All necklaces have been made using reclaimed pearls & vintage semi~precious stone elements, meticulously sourced & reworked. All bags have been made using reclaimed & deadstock fabric that has been reimagined, with PALMWORKS’ signature colour ways & material combinations serving as a guiding thread that runs through the collection. All silver has been renewed, recycled or repurposed. These choices help prolong the circularity of existing resources in the world, diminishing the need to extract new materials from earth, to the detriment of people and place. Within in the resources we already have available to us, there is so much magic - these materials are often just waiting to be seen in a new light.
Matter Forms
Matter Forms is a London-based interdisciplinary design studio founded by Mooka Srisurayotin. The studio's ethos is to take a material-led approach to architectural design, pushing the boundaries of creativity and sustainability. Oyster[Crete] is the studio’s first material, developed in-house over two years of research. The material transforms discarded oyster shells into a bio-alternative to traditional concrete that is then applied to unique interior-design led pieces, ranging from lighting to candle-holders and bookends.
Sara Howard
Sara Howard is an award-winning London designer, building new systems in pursuit of circularity and regeneration in the ceramic industry and beyond. Sara graduated from Central St. Martins in 2020, studying BA Honours Degree in Ceramic Design. In her final year, Sara designed an industrial symbiosis around the ceramics industry, whereby waste from one industry replaces the virgin raw materials in ceramic production. Sara’s methods and processes are shared in her book, Circular Ceramics, allowing fellow ceramicists to adopt the sustainable processes in their own practice.
Sara’s series of extruded plates are made from industrial waste, sourced locally in London. The forms are extruded, a process that does not create by-products or require electricity.
OUT OF STOCK STUDIO
Out of Stock Studio is an upcycling concept-brand that dissects unwanted garments and reassembles them into unique, wearable pieces. Off-the-peg suits sourced from vintage stores are meticulously unpicked and re-cut into oversized harrington jackets. Outdated trench coats are transformed into combat pants, IKEA duvets are reimagined as kimono jackets. All the while, pockets, trims and details from the original garment survive the transformation process and are positioned on the finished garments to give a feeling of familiar functionality.
Nim Gadhia, the founder of Out Of Stock has been in the fashion industry for over 20 years and after 10 years of working as a designer for various brands in Amsterdam, he has returned to London to start a more sustainable fashion journey.
USKOH SHOP
Dina at Uskoh Shop creates ceramic vegetables. As a creator, Dina enjoys exploring different materials and new techniques to work with - she have always enjoyed making and working with various mediums such as clay and textiles. Additionally, food has been another big part of her life and was the family connection while growing up around her grandparents' farm in Nepal.
Each piece made receives a lot of care and attention. Creating pieces that bring Dina joy is a top priority, and she hopes that they will bring joy to you as well.
LOUIS BARRETT
Louis Benjamin Barrett (b.1999) is a designer and artist based in London. Graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2021, his work reflects an interconnectivity between digital and physical; a testament to how technology can be used to enhance our perception of the natural world - to augment and metamorphose. Through this process of recontextualisation, he explores how the beauty of organic forms can be venerated, creating functional, sculptural objects that uphold yet transcend the personality of their predecessors.
Atelier Wa=ma
Rickie Cheuk, founder of Atelier WA = MA, is a Metalsmith who produces artisanal objects. The core of the practice centres on giving waste new meaning through material exploration via playful making. Rickie practices circular design by producing objects using waste materials from different industries, including handcrafted WA=MA chopsticks and cutlery, made from reclaimed stainless steel
Body Amplification Device
Mario Serrano Puche founded Body Amplification Devices (BAD), a creative practice dedicated to crafting hyper-individual wearables utilizing a combination of cutting-edge digital tools such as 3D printing and algorithmic modeling with analogue techniques such as sewing, hand-dying and sanding. Through this practice he has focused on exploring a new form of craft that merges the digital and the analogue to enable a more economically and environmentally sustainable bespoke production and an adaptable aesthetic.
Solent Works
Solent Works is a contemporary woodcraft studio founded by Louis Vincent in Hampshire, England. The studio's practice is centered on woodturning and lacquerware to produce vessels as representations of the natural world by using sustainably sourced British hardwoods.
FABRECO BY RECONSIDERED
Reconsidered is a circular fashion start-up that have developed Fabreco, a recycled solid material made from waste textiles and bio-resin. Using innovative technology the recycled textile material has uses ranging from furniture, to jewellery, to homeware design.
atelier cé
Cécile Dumetier is a multidisciplinary designer and potter based in London. As the founder and creative director of Studio Omelette, she partners with individuals and brands to shape their stories, creating impactful design for now and the future. Additionally, Cécile is a maker and creates distinctive ceramic pieces under the name, Atelier Cé. Most recently, she curated and designed an exhibition at Silo, London’s iconic zero-waste restaurant, showcasing a unique ceramic glaze developed from recycled wine bottles collected from the restaurant. Her latest ceramic work incorporates this innovative, sustainable glaze.
Potter’s Thumb x Silo
Mark Ciavola is a second-generation ceramist and the founder of Potters Thumb in London. Mark has dedicated over 7 years to the exploration of waste glass, intensely investigating its potential as a resource often misclassified as waste. He recognises the value of single-use glasses and seeks to use it as a primary ingredient in the production of sustainable materials for essential products. This has created an opportunity to explore numerous methods for transforming waste into valuable resources, contributing to a circular economy, and aiming to establish a legacy for a sustainable future. Mark's dedication lies in creating a sustainable, innovative material from waste glass capable of withstanding higher contamination levels without significantly compromising its properties.
WAX ATELIER
WAX ATELIER is the London-based studio specialised in handmade wax products using natural and sustainable materials. Exploring the intersection between traditional craft and contemporary techniques in beeswax and natural materials, the design studio create beautiful hand-dipped beeswax candles.
Ingerid Gullerud
Ingerid Gullerud is an emerging Norwegian scenographer and visual artist based in London. Ingerid has experience both professionally and independently working with set design for film, music videos, photoshoots, live performances and installation art. In 2021, Ingerid graduated with a master's in fine art in scenography from the Royal Central School of Speech and drama and is now living and working as a designer in London.
