FibreLab X Matter Forms : Material Innovation
During the recent London Design Festival at the Shoreditch Design Triangle, FibreLab featured in various innovative design showcases, alongside Matter Forms - a material-led disciplinary design collective. Matter Forms specialise in circular solutions for the built environment and during this September’s Design Festival they presented Oyster[Crete].
Oyster[Crete] is the design studio’s first material innovation, developed in-house after two years of extensive research, that transforms oyster shell waste into a bio- alternative to traditional concrete. This versatile, circular solution caters to both small design pieces and large scale architectural applications, embodying principles of sustainability and innovation that establish a new standard for design practices.
To start off Matter Forms’ display at London Design Festival, Oyster[Crete] showcased, from the 14th to the 21st of September, at UJNG a luxury retail shop featuring independent and global designers. As part of the Oyster[Crete] display FibreLab created bespoke PaperTex display posters, made from 100% recycled cotton fibres. The bespoke display cards were designed and digitally printed in-house.
Oyster Metamorphosis
To conclude the London Design Festival, FibreLab and Matter Forms hosted an exclusive evening celebration in collaboration with the zero-waste restaurant Silo London. The event showcased a collection of sustainable design-led interior objects that demonstrated the innovative transformation of local shell waste, sourced from Silo, into candleholders, table lamps, oyster trays and tables. The evening was a multi-sensory journey, complete with canapés, champagne, soundscapes, and motion graphic projections by 3axis Studio, alongside the visually captivating display of circular products made from waste.

FibreLab x Matter Forms The Sashimono Stool
The Oyster Metamorphosis event also showcased a Matter Forms x FibreLab x Fabreco product innovation, created with Reconsidered. Fabreco, an innovative composite material made from recycled textile fibres and bio-resin, was applied to furniture for the first time to create The Sashimono Stool, which launched at Silo. This Japanese-inspired stool transforms waste textiles collected from local businesses in London and shredded in our East London by mixing the fibres with a bio-resin. The Sashimono Stool is made from a high percentage of recycled textiles and bound together with only a small amount of bio-resin.
The Sashimono Stool is inspired by traditional Japanese joinery techniques that assemble furniture without nails. This piece reimagines waste textiles, through the lens of designer Mooka Srisurayotin, founder of Matter Forms. The recycled fibres are mixed with bio-resin, pressed and CNC cut into shape by Fabreco.
Rippling Candleholder
Guided by the elements of the ocean’s small continuous undulations, this modular candle holder is formed by three parts, which can be used together or individually. Each candle unique by its height invites a different atmosphere and situation. The varying sized holes can be used to hold a variety of decorative items from candles to flowers.
Oyster[Crete] Tray
Crafted from locally discarded oyster shells sourced from seafood restaurants in East London, this tray embraces circularity from conception to materiality. More than just a functional object the Oyster[Crete] Tray subtly reflects its origins, embodying the rock pools where the material can be found in nature.
Oc-table Lamp
The oc-table lamp created in collaboration with Atelier WA=MA is a cordless lamp created from discarded oyster shells, with a dimmable soft glow light. The wavy textures of the lamp base mimic the textured composition of the oyster shell form while the soft spherical lamp reflects the essence of the oyster pearl.
Bio-erosion Table
Inspired by the ocean’s natural beauty, the bio-erosion table features organic curves and rounded forms that echo erosion patterns found in nature. Crafted with sustainability at its core, it’s made from Osyer[Crete] paired with reclaimed aluminium, by Atelier WA=MA, to mimic the reflections of the ocean.
Sea-borne Cutlery by WA=MA
Additional highlights included recycled metal sea-borne cutlery developed in collaboration with atelier WA=MA - an atelier by designer and Materials Explorer Rickie Cheuk. Atelier WA=MA, guided by the principle that ‘waste is material’, centres on innovative material exploration, practising circular design by producing objects using waste materials. In the handcrafted WA=MA tableware collection, made from reclaimed stainless steel, pieces have refreshing new aesthetics, are playful and functional, and designed for life.
The Sea-borne cutlery set is designed to elevate everyday table settings and contribute to a sensory dining experience. The cutlery is handmade in reclaimed stainless steel.
